Asylum applications increased by 161 percent in the previous year

In terms of gender distribution, the majority of refugees are male, more than 85 percent. The nation with the highest number of applications are still Syrians, followed by Afghans. Morocco follows in third place. 1,865 citizens of the North African country applied for asylum. The chance of a positive decision is extremely small. Only three Moroccans were legally granted asylum last year. Almost 1,400 received negative notices.

Asylum was granted for a good 77 percent of Syrian applications. Somalis, the fourth largest group of asylum seekers last year, also have a high recognition rate of more than 61 percent. Interestingly, Turks had a better chance than Afghans. On the other hand, the Afghans are again the group that received the most subsidiary protection grants, a kind of “asylum light”. When it comes to humanitarian residence permits, Iraqis lead the way, followed by Afghans, but just ahead of Russian refugees.

18,800 positive decisions in the previous year

A total of around 18,800 applications were approved in the previous year, and almost 37,000 people received a legally negative decision. Eleven Ukrainians were among those refugees who were granted asylum status. For comparison: 226 citizens of the Russian Federation received the right of asylum.

This time the number of open procedures has increased significantly. At the end of 2021, it was just under 28,000. That was the highest value since 2018. In 2020 there were only a good 20,000 procedures.
