A year earlier, 508,923 people were still without a job and the rate was 10.7 percent. There was also an improvement compared to February 2019, when there was no sign of the pandemic. At that time, 410,355 people were unemployed and in training, which corresponded to a rate of 8.4 percent.
In February 2020, when the pandemic started in Europe but not yet in lockdown, 399,359 people were unemployed or in training and the rate was 8.1 percent. The peak was in mid-April 2020 with 588,000 unemployed and around one million people on short-time work. 187,127 people are now pre-registered for short-time work.
In February, long-term unemployment also fell slightly to 105,649. In January, around 110,000 people were classified as long-term unemployed.
