The president of the United States, donald trumpThis Sunday he described his counterpart from Colombia, Gustavo Petrolike a “drug trafficking leader” and an “illegal drug trafficker”. In addition, the US president cut subsidies from his country to the Colombian government, an escalation between both countries that adds tension in the region, in parallel to the attacks on Venezuela.
Through a publication in Truth Social, Trump assured that Petro is linked to drug trafficking and said that he would reduce US aid to Colombia. He justified his decision by citing the Colombian leader’s “inaction” to stop drug production, or that he “does nothing to stop” said production.
The Republican president referred to Petro as someone who is “strongly encouraging the mass production of drugs, in large and small fields” throughout Colombia. Trump also noted that Petro is “low rated and very unpopular.”

“The purpose of this drug production is to sell massive quantities of product to the United States, causing death, destruction and havoc,” Trump said in a Truth Social publication.
“Petro (…) is a drug trafficking leader who vigorously promotes the mass production of drugs,” Trump added.claiming that US subsidies to Colombia were a scam.
Trump wrote that Petro does nothing to stop drug trafficking, despite “large-scale US payments and subsidies that are nothing more than long-term theft.” He warned Petro that he “better shut down” the drug operations, or the United States will shut them down for him, “and it won’t be done kindly.”

Finally, the US president declared that, as of that day, “these payments, or any other form of payment, or subsidies will no longer be made with Colombia.” The purpose of this drug production, according to Trump, is the “massive sale of products to the United States, causing death, destruction and havoc.”
The statements come a month after the United States removed Colombia from the list of countries fighting against drugs, along with four other nations, for having “manifestly failed to comply” with its international anti-drug obligations during the last year. Notably, Colombia is the world’s largest exporter of cocaine, and coca leaf cultivation reached an all-time high last year, according to a United Nations report.
Relations between Bogotá and Washington have deteriorated since Trump returned to office. Last month, the United States revoked Petro’s visa after the president joined a pro-Palestinian rally in New York and urged American soldiers to disobey the Republican’s orders.

Minutes later, the Colombian president justified: “Trying to promote peace in Colombia is not being a drug trafficker,” the president added.
