Ukraine pressures the European Union for its accession in the middle of the war

“Europe will be stronger with Ukraine in its midst. Without you, Ukraine will be alone. We have proven our strength. That is why, prove that you are with us, prove that you will not abandon us“, said.

At the session, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, accused Russia of “geopolitical terrorism” for the invasion of Ukraine, and highlighted the unity of the EU in condemning this military offensive.

“It is not just Ukraine that is under attack. International law, the rules-based international order, democracy, human dignity is also under attack. This is geopolitical terrorism, pure and simple,” Michel said in his speech.

In his vision, Russia launched an offensive based on “abject lies.”

For her part, the head of the European Commission (executive body of the EU), Ursula von der Leyenassured that it is not only the fate of Ukraine that is at stake because of the military offensive, but that of Europe, and therefore the situation required a collective response.

Ukraine’s fate is at stake, but so is our own fate. We must show the power that lies in our democracies“said the German official.

For Von der Leyen, “how we respond to what Russia is doing will determine the future of the international system.”

The European Union is under heavy pressure to grant Ukraine protection, but the bloc’s accession process traditionally takes several years, in some cases almost a decade, of internal negotiations and reforms.

On Monday, Zelensky signed Ukraine’s formal application for EU membership through a “special procedure.”

On that same day, Michel had admitted that Ukraine’s immediate accession generated “different opinions.”
