The Supreme Court of Brazil sentenced this Tuesday seven participants in the coup attempt led by former president Jair Bolsonaro, imposing sentences of between 7.5 and 17 years in prison. Those convicted include a federal police, five soldiers and the president of an electoral audit institutewho contributed with “digital militias” to spread disinformation about the 2022 elections.

The judge-rapporteur Alexandre de Moraes pointed out that the convicted “they manufactured and disseminated false narratives about the electoral process with the aim of generating social chaos and instability to achieve institutional rupture”. Bolsonaro, who already received a 27-year sentence in September for leading an armed criminal organization to stay in power after losing to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has been under house arrest since August and is prohibited from demonstrating on social networks.

Those convicted have five days to appeal the sentence. The former president’s defense announced that it will appeal the Supreme Court ruling, and once the appeals are resolved, Bolsonaro could be sent to prison. Meanwhile, 16 additional defendants await sentencing in the coming weeks.
Amnesty attempts and political reaction
At the end of September, the Lower House approved a project of law that opened the door to amnesty for Bolsonaro and those convicted of the January 2023 riot against seats of power in Brasilia, but in the face of massive protests, Congress softened its content, limiting the initiative to a possible reduction of sentences.
