McLaren driver Lando Norris has taken the overall lead in the Formula 1 World Championship with a commanding start-to-finish victory at the Mexican Grand Prix. The Briton triumphed in Mexico City on Sunday with a respectable margin ahead of Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen in the Red Bull. Norris benefited from a weak Grand Prix by his teammate Oscar Piastri, who finished fifth. Four race weekends before the end of the season, Norris is now one point ahead of Piastri.
“Wonderful weekend. We have to keep it up,” said a satisfied Norris after his tenth GP victory and the sixth this season. Defending champion Verstappen is currently 36 points behind Norris. Oliver Bearman, meanwhile, drove an outstanding race. The Haas rookie improved by five positions, left Piastri behind and finished fourth. The Mercedes drivers Kimi Antonelli and George Russell took sixth and seventh place ahead of record world champion Lewis Hamilton in the Ferrari. In two weeks the motorsport premier class continues with a sprint weekend in Interlagos/Brazil.
Verstappen brakes in turn one
In qualifying, Norris secured pole position, followed by Leclerc and Hamilton. Verstappen only finished fifth behind Russell, and Piastri only started from seventh position. On the 1.2 km long start-finish straight at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, Norris, the two Ferraris and Verstappen drove side by side into the first corner. The Red Bull driver braked on the outside, took the detour across the grass and finished fourth behind Norris, Leclerc and Hamilton. Piastri, however, slipped to ninth position.
