Philipp Maderthaner: “Ambition has to come back into play”

He is an entrepreneur, campaign expert, “transformation pioneer”, former investor in the TV show “2 Minutes, 2 Million” and podcaster: Philipp Maderthaner knows how to inspire people. In the “Clever Club” he gives insights and tells for the first time how he moved to India unnoticed for six months and what this time taught him about “hunger for more”.

How would you explain what you do for a living to a six-year-old child?

I would say I help other people do things that others enjoy being a part of. So it’s always about creating enthusiasm and a good atmosphere – be it in politics, marketing or management consulting. My common thread is: moving and motivating people to achieve something together.

You were active in politics, for example, you ran the campaigns for former Chancellor Sebastian Kurz. What particularly attracted you to it?

I was less interested in substantive politics than in “moving” people, in sparking a real movement. It was exciting to see how communication and campaigns can get a large group excited about a cause. I learned a lot about the importance of authentic conviction. I saw politics as a kind of playing field – comparable to working in a big brand, but with special social responsibility. But after a while I realized that I didn’t want to do this all my life. The dark side of politics has simply become too great.

How did you deal with being pigeonholed into a certain political box?

For me it was and is completely irrelevant. I stand by my work and am very proud of what I have achieved as a campaign professional. Anyone who sees my experience as an advantage is welcome to come to me – anyone who sees things differently politically just leaves it alone. That’s completely fine with me. You can’t please everyone and you have to admit that to yourself. Rejection is one of the “fixed costs” of being visible.
