After congratulating Javier Milei for his “overwhelming victory”, Donald Trump arrived in Japan this Monday, with the aim of meeting with the prime minister Sanae Takaichi and with the emperor Naruhito. In addition, he will give a speech on the aircraft carrier USS George Washington and will sign agreements on critical minerals and shipbuilding.
His meeting with the emperor would become the second meeting between both heads of state since May 2019when Trump became the first foreign dignitary to visit the then newly enthroned emperor.
That schedule will be followed by a meeting on Tuesday morning with Sanae Takaichi, the first woman to lead the Asian country, which is expected to be dominated by trade. Days before starting his tour, Trump praised Takaichi: “I’ve heard wonderful things about her.”. The stay of the American president in the Asian country will be extended until this Wednesday.
Japanese imports to the US
On the other hand, Trump will meet with the president of Toyota, since in economic matters and trade negotiations, the Japanese imports to the US are subject to 15% tariffsless than the 25% initially imposed; and the Exports of Japanese cars to the American country fell 24% in September in terms of year-on-year value.
Under the agreement reached in July, it is expected that Japan invests 550 billion dollars in the US. Washington is also seeking to stop Japan from buying Russian energy, importing American gas and participating in a gas pipeline project in Alaska.
After winning the PLD primaries on October 4, Takaichi expressed that Japan will “observe” the agreementespecially in relation to the implementation of the investments it contemplates and will leave the door open to a possible revision.
