Hungary should make it more difficult for refugees to enter the country

The Hungarian border protection authorities informed the Romanian border police on Wednesday afternoon that only refugees with a biometric passport would be granted visa-free entry into the Schengen state. Anyone who does not have a biometric passport must remain in Romania, a non-Schengen country.

Accordingly, long queues formed within a few hours at the western Romanian border crossings to Hungary. Thousands of Ukrainian refugees want to travel to Western Europe via Hungary, many to relatives or acquaintances.

The Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu said in an initial reaction in the evening that he was trying to find solutions both at bilateral and at EU level. He had already had an initial discussion on this with the diplomats at the Hungarian embassy in Bucharest; the European authorities were also informed, according to Aurescu.
