There are already 227 dead civilians and one million displaced

The office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said that the figure exceeds the deaths in Ukraine in 2014 in the first year of conflict between the Army and Russian-speaking separatists in the east of the country, which was 137 dead and 557 wounded.

The body said that the real figure is surely much higherand explained that to estimate his he used a very strict methodology that only takes into account confirmed victims.

Ukraine said, for its part, that the civilian dead were more than 2,000.

Most of the casualties were caused by explosive weapons with a wide impact, including heavy artillery shelling and rockets from multiple launch systems and air strikes.

For its part, the UN agency for refugees(UNHCR) said that a million people have already fled Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion, a week ago, an exodus at an unprecedented rate so far this century.

UNHCR’s tally is equivalent to more than 2% of Ukraine’s population of 44 million people, and in just one week of fighting.

The UN body has predicted that up to 4 million people could have to leave Ukraine, but warned that even that estimate could be revised upwards.

“Our data shows that we passed the one million (refugee) mark” at midnight in central Europe, based on counts supplied by national authorities, UNHCR spokesman Joung-ah Ghedini-Williams wrote in an email. CNN news network reported.

UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi said on Twitter that “in just seven days we have seen the exodus of a million refugees from Ukraine to neighboring countries.”

Syria, whose war began in 2011, remains the country with the largest number of refugees, more than 5.4 million people.

But even at the time when the exodus from Syria was most pronounced, in early 2013, it took the country at least three months to reach a million refugees.

UNHCR said this week that, at this rate, Ukraine’s is foreshadowing the “biggest refugee crisis of this century.”
