Number of Ukraine refugees continues to rise sharply

Most of them want to go to the EU. According to President Andrzej Duda, more than 700,000 refugees have arrived in Poland since the beginning of the war. To date, almost 145,000 people have landed in Hungary, and around 194,000 in Moldova, a non-EU country. The UN Organization for Migration stated on Friday that around 1.25 million people should be on the move. Almost 79,000 non-Ukrainians are said to be among the refugees.

There are nationals from around 170 countries around the world, said Duda on Friday during a visit to the Polish-Ukrainian border crossing in Korczowa. “We accept everyone who needs it”. Some of the refugees from third countries have already started their journey home from Poland. Among them, for example, was a large group of Indian students who had fled the war in Ukraine. The Indian government sent a coordinator who organized the trip home.

Duda said he does not rule out that Poland will soon ask other countries for help because of the growing number of refugees. Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had already promised him on the phone that his country would take in refugees.

In Germany, the number of registered refugees doubled within a day. The Federal Police identified 18,436 refugees by Friday afternoon, as a spokesman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior in Berlin said. On Thursday, the ministry had given the number as 9,436. By Thursday, around 11,000 Ukrainian war refugees had crossed the border in Austria. By Friday, more than 50,000 refugees had arrived in our northern neighbor, the Czech Republic.

Meanwhile, the EU Commission announced further aid supplies for Ukraine. Additional medical assistance is provided through camps located in Germany, Hungary and the Netherlands. In view of the number of refugees, the EU is also supporting Ukraine’s neighboring countries. Greece, Austria and Germany, for example, have provided Slovakia with masks, disinfectants, bedding, tents and clothing.
