The LASK between own mistakes, false information and VAR technology

The athletes have to blame themselves for the fact that LASK no longer has a chance of winning the Bundesliga championship before tomorrow’s game in Wolfsberg. The performances – especially in the fall – just weren’t good enough. Although the arrow was pointing up recently, in the end it is your own fault if, for example, you weaken yourself through exclusions week after week. Lots of things may have gone wrong. You didn’t make the mistake of looking for excuses.

Nevertheless, the astonishment at many a decision and also at the justification was great. For example, when LASK last asked the Bundesliga whether cooperation players who were on the ball for FC Juniors Upper Austria last weekend could be called up for the game against Salzburg that was postponed from Sunday to Wednesday. The Bundesliga rejected this in writing, which is why LASK put the squad together accordingly.

Salzburg did use cooperation players when it was 0-0 on Wednesday. At OÖN’s request, the league confirmed yesterday: “Unfortunately, at the request of LASK, an employee wrongly confirmed that cooperation players were not eligible. The office at LASK apologized for this.” Salzburg also asked and “received the correct answer from the league that cooperation players are operational”.

A protest was never thought of, even if the LASK lawyer John Lehner says: “From my point of view, a protest against the certification has an absolutely legitimate interest. However, for reasons of fair play and respect for the other clubs concerned, LASK decided against it. Ultimately, other clubs should not be disadvantaged by incorrect information suffer. That doesn’t change the fact that LASK was disadvantaged.”

It was an unfortunate coincidence of circumstances – but not the only one. There were also VAR decisions. According to the official broadcast against Salzburg, VAR “requested the TV picture on Wednesday, but could not be transmitted for technical reasons”. That’s how it stayed after the clear red foul by Nicholas Capaldo at Peter Michorl at yellow. That this had been wrong was officially confirmed the day after the game. Yesterday, when OÖN asked, it was not possible to find out whether the handball in the penalty area, which had been heavily complained about shortly beforehand, was not rated for technical reasons or was not rated as punishable.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was also there Alexander Harkam the referee who was also on the screen when LASK scored 1-1 against Rapid. At that time, every TV viewer had the clear penalty foul Mamoudou Karamoko seen. However, Harkam had not watched the TV shot, which is why an official statement was then recommended: “Another perspective in the large screen should be used in the future for security.” In the end everything fits together as a reflection of the LASK autumn: stupid. Hopefully everything will be better from now on.
