One-way regulation on the border bridge in Hochburg/Ach ends up in a German court

It is curious that the bridge on the Austrian side can theoretically be crossed in both directions. From the middle of Germany, however, only on one side as a one-way street. Because here are the one-way street and prohibition signs that the city of Burghausen put up in January. The city council had opted for the one-way rule in order to calm the adjacent town square from traffic, increase security and reduce noise in the old town, argued Burghausen’s mayor Florian Schneider (SPD).

Many Austrians on the other side of the Salzach don’t like that. Residents complain about more traffic on the alternative routes and commuters about longer distances. The plaintiff, for example, has to take the detour via the second Salzach bridge on the way home.

Obviously, the one-way crossing on the bridge was not coordinated with the Austrian neighbors. “You have been presented with a fait accompli,” says the mayor of Hochburg-Ach, Martin Zimmer (ÖVP), to the dpa. Adjustments were also necessary in the Austrian municipality, such as the establishment of a 30 km/h zone.
