The United States considers giving warplanes to Ukraine

“It’s impossible to talk about a timetable, but I can say that we are looking at this very, very actively,” Blinken told reporters during a visit to Moldova, which has received a wave of refugees from Ukraine and fears it could also be under Moscow threat.

According to Polish media, Poland could hand over its Soviet-made MIG-29 fighter jets, which Ukrainian pilots know well, and in return the Polish army would receive F-16 fighters from the United States.

Blinken and other Western leaders had earlier in the week denied the possibility that a country in the NATO deliver warplanes to Ukraine.

The Secretary of State acknowledged, however, this Sunday that they were contemplating this option.

“We are now actively analyzing the issue of sending planes from Poland to Ukraine and how we could compensate for it,” he added.

These remarks come the day after a meeting between Blinken and his Ukrainian counterpart, Dmytro Kuleba, on the Polish-Ukrainian border.

Ukraine insisted in that meeting on the delivery of fighters and air defense systems, in addition to criticize NATO’s refusal to establish a no-fly zone.

According to Blinken, the Biden administration is engaged in “very active dialogue with Ukrainian leaders for any assessment of their needs.”

However, the Polish government is reluctant to the US proposal to provide its warplanes to Ukraine.

Poland will not send its military aircraft to Ukraine and will not authorize the use of its airports. We bring significant help in many other aspects,” the Polish prime minister’s office said on Twitter.

Washington announced last week it was sending $350 million in military aid to Ukraine, the largest in US history.
