The next double pack

After silver in the Downhill, Markus Salcher also finished second in the Super-G yesterday in Beijing. In doing so, the Carinthian proved that he always scores twice in the speed competitions at the Paralympics. Salcher returned home from the standing class races in Sochi with two gold medals in 2014, and two bronze medals in 2018 in Pyeongchang.

Surprisingly, yesterday’s Super-G Gold went to China’s Jingyi Liang, who set the best time with start number one on the course set by his trainer. Not being at the top didn’t spoil Salcher’s good mood. “All in all, the Super-G was almost better than the downhill,” said the 30-year-old. Only with a curve he quarreled a little bit. “I don’t even know if it’s possible to do that with a bad leg. But once the head coach (Markus Gutenbrunner; note) is satisfied, that means something. I’ve never seen him so emotional.” Possibly also because Salcher had given out a medal as a goal before the games – now he has two of them. “I’m overjoyed with the yield,” he summed up.

There had been discussions about the classification of Victor Liang’s disability in recent months, as he was reclassified four times within a short period of time. “We protested before the season because that shouldn’t really happen,” said Salcher.

Bronze for Johannes Aigner

Johannes Aigner was also happy about his second medal yesterday. The Lower Austrian carved in the Super-G behind guide Matteo Fleischmann to bronze in the visually impaired class. “We tried again to take the riskier line as close as possible to the net. Unfortunately, there were a bit of a hitch here and there,” said 16-year-old Aigner, who won the downhill on Saturday.

Yesterday, the Lower Austrian duo was also lucky, keeping only four hundredths of a second ahead of the fourth-placed French.
