Mariendom has a hermit again

After a three-year break due to the spire renovation, Birgit Kubik (51) is the first hermit to move back into the tower room of the Mariendom in Linz.

The hermits spend seven days each – from Friday to Friday – in the tower room, which is around nine square meters in size. During the stay there are daily meetings with a spiritual guide.

Birgit Kubik, mother of two from Enns, wished the week for her 50th birthday from family and friends. “The prospect of this week has been an anchor for me over the past year and a half, a ray of hope to get away from our exhausting everyday life with our autistic son Max,” says Kubik. For them it is a luxury to have time exclusively for themselves. “I’m looking forward to just sitting there, not having to think about anything, not having to do anything. To the calm, the quiet.”

Since 2009, more than 260 women and men have taken advantage of the offer of being a hermit. The week in the tower can be spent during Lent and Easter, during the summer months of July and August, as well as during Advent and Christmas.

Participation is possible from the age of 18 and regardless of origin and religious affiliation. A certain level of fitness is required, as there are 395 steps to climb to the Hermitage. Information on registration at www.turmeremit.at
