Ohlsdorf: Kaineder puts the building stop in the room

A statement of the facts and a statement by the Upper Austrian environmental attorney yesterday prompted environmental prosecutor Stefan Kaineder to announce a construction freeze for the scandal-ridden “Ehrenfeld II industrial construction area” project. “Of course, we will follow up on the new findings made public by the environmental attorney and check his assessment of whether there is an EIA obligation due to the large-scale mining of gravel,” said Kaineder.

In his presentation of the facts, the environmental attorney questioned whether the removal of a layer of gravel from a depth of up to six meters to create a building subgrade was justified or whether it was part of the offense of removing gravel and therefore required an environmental impact assessment.

The state’s environmental agency is also currently checking the construction site to see whether the use of the removed gravel for concrete production is legally compliant.
