Many events took place in Austria in the run-up to Women’s Day, but women are also the focus of events on Tuesday: The Austrian Women’s Ring starts at 8.30 a.m. on Ballhausplatz with a press conference entitled “Wanted! Women’s Politics” and criticizes the incomplete implementation of anti-violence measures and financial disadvantage. Secretary of Defense Tanner takes the opportunity to visit female soldiers. At the “Take Back The Streets” rally in Vienna, there are demonstrations against sexism, transphobia and patriarchal violence.

In the afternoon, the Bertha von Suttner Private University will hold an online lecture about its namesake (“From literary to political pacifism: Bertha von Suttner”). At the panel discussion “Justice speaks”, Justice Minister Alma Zadić, among others, will discuss “women’s paths in human rights”. At 6 p.m. the benefit concert “You – unusually self-evident” starts with the initiator Ina Regen and the rapper Fiva in the Vienna Konzerthaus.

The establishment of Women’s Day dates back to a 1908 strike by textile workers in the USA. According to the United Nations, women in New York protested against the poor working conditions. On March 19, 1911, the first large demonstration for women’s rights took place in Vienna.
