“We have recently reached an agreement with the Chinese government for a visit,” Bachelet told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, explaining that preparations have “begun” for this trip that it is planned “to take place in May”.
A team of people who work with the former president of Chile will travel to China next month to prepare for this visit.
Michelle Bachelet, who is to publish a report on Xinjiang that is eagerly awaited by Western countries and NGOs, has been calling for “unhindered access” to that city for years, where Beijing is accused of violating the most basic rights of Uyghurs.
But it had not been possible for now to organize a visit to the area. Chinese authorities have also refused to authorize a UN investigation into Xinjiang.
A spokeswoman for the High Commissioner, Elizabeth Throssell, specified that the team will visit Xinjiang. The high commissioner will also visit Beijing and other parts of the country, according to the spokeswoman.
“Agreement was reached on the parameters of our methodology [de investigación] and which include the free access to a large number of actors, including civil society“, he stressed.
Countries like United States, France and United KingdomThey accused China of committing “genocide” against the Uyghur minority.
At least one million people from the Uyghur Muslim minority are incarcerated in camps in this region of northwestern China, activists say.
The local authorities refute these accusations and assure that they are professional training camps, destined to keep these people away from extremism and terrorism.
Bachelet planned to publish a report on the Xinjiang region at the beginning of the year, much anticipated by Western countries and NGOs. But this Tuesday, Throssell limited himself to saying that he did not have “precise information” about the disclosure of that document.
