The reason for the standstill was delivery problems with cable harnesses from the Ukraine. However, the situation remains “very volatile” and could change any day, a company spokeswoman said. It is still “driving on sight”.
The entire MAN group is affected by the current lack of deliveries of cable harnesses from the Ukraine. As a result, contract manufacturing at the Steyr plant in the area of driver’s cab and truck assembly has been suspended since last Thursday up to and including Tuesday. The further procedure is based on MAN’s cross-plant planning. “The procurement for MAN production lies exclusively with MAN,” emphasized the company spokeswoman.
She also made it clear again that sanctions against Russia would not affect Steyr Automotive’s ongoing business. The preparatory work for the series production of 27,000 electric trucks by 2025 is underway for the Swedish start-up Volta. The technical preparations for the vehicles that owner Siegfried Wolf wants to produce in Steyr are also being continued. Various options are currently being examined for alternative deliveries of components. “Due to the uncertain situation worldwide, no statements can be made at this time as to when the Steyr vehicles will be launched on the market.”
At the end of February, Steyr Automotive had applied for the extension of short-time work until the end of June due to supplier bottlenecks for semiconductors. Around 2,100 people are currently employed in Steyr, including 150 apprentices and around 250 leased workers.
