The kidneys influence many bodily functions. Signs of damage can be different. Senior physician Manfred Wallner (nephrology and dialysis) from the Wels-Grieskirchen clinic explains what to look out for:
- Increased nocturnal urination
- high blood pressure
- Weakness, malaise, headache, sleep disturbances
- Dryness, flaking and yellowing of the skin, impaired wound healing, water retention
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and taste disturbances
- Heart and respiratory problems, anemia, coagulation disorders, susceptibility to infections, softening of bones, hormone disorders
- In advanced urinary intoxication: central nervous system disorders, seizures, confusion and loss of consciousness
The Upper Austrian kidney specialist also gives everyday tips for a healthy kidney: Staying fit and sporty, avoiding sugar, diabetics protect their organs best with well-adjusted blood sugar levels, high blood pressure damages the blood vessels and thus the kidneys, avoid being overweight, drink plenty of water and avoid nicotine
