Nuclear power plant expansion: Too expensive and too dangerous

In a joint press conference, Environmental Councilor Stefan Kaineder (Greens) and relevant associations presented important issues for the anti-nuclear movement in 2022. The hostilities surrounding the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine are another example of the danger that says Kaineder: “Not all Russian soldiers always know how dangerous the situation is.”

That’s why it’s important for Europe to get out of nuclear power, explained Gabriele Schweiger from the Atomstopp Association. The planned step by the EU to classify nuclear energy as an environmentally friendly source of energy and thus make it eligible for funding is particularly worrying. Edvard Sequens from the Czech environmental organization Calla also announced that they would oppose this reclassification.

According to Kaineder, a lobby is currently trying to portray nuclear energy as a necessary source of electricity in order to become independent of Russian gas and meet climate targets: “We know that nuclear power plants can only go into operation years later, that takes far too long.” In addition, energy from nuclear power is much more expensive than that from renewable sources such as wind and water, and the producers are dependent on government subsidies.
