According to figures from Statistics Austria, 19 percent had only recovered from an illness at that time. 37 percent had not yet had contact with the virus (neither vaccinated nor recovered). The vaccination rate increases with age: in elementary school it was 21 percent and in high school it was 73 percent. In concrete terms, 21 percent of the pupils in elementary school had an up-to-date vaccination certificate (vaccinated or vaccinated/recovered). Roughly the same proportion (22 percent) had only recovered. 58 percent were neither vaccinated nor recovered.
At lower secondary school, 44 percent had a valid vaccination certificate, 21 percent were only recovered, and 36 percent were neither vaccinated nor recovered. At the senior high schools, 73 percent were vaccinated, 13 percent recovered only, and 14 percent were neither vaccinated nor recovered.
The numbers also show how many students have already survived an infection (either in connection with a vaccination or without): Overall, this was about one in four – in the lower grades it was a little more, in the upper grades a little less. The elementary schools are practically average.
Vaccination rates and infection numbers by federal state
Burgenland (55 percent), which is the only federal state to be above the 50 percent mark, has the highest vaccination rates among schoolchildren. Just below this bar are Vienna (49 percent) and Lower Austria (48 percent), with Upper Austria (39 percent) and Carinthia (37 percent) bringing up the rear.
The students in Salzburg caught a corona infection most frequently, where almost a third were already positive (either in connection with a vaccination or without). In Tyrol it was 28 percent. The children in Burgenland (16 percent), in Lower Austria and Styria (20 percent each) were infected the least often.
For teachers, 83 percent have a valid vaccination certificate (either vaccinated or vaccinated/recovered). Nine percent have only recovered. The vaccination rate is highest at the AHS (88 percent), lowest in elementary schools (79 percent). Around 15 percent of teachers have already been infected, nine percent are neither vaccinated nor recovered.
The numbers are similar for students – however, only people with an up-to-date vaccination certificate (vaccinated or vaccinated/recovered) are shown here. Overall, 84 percent of the students were vaccinated. There are no major differences between the university sectors – only the specially designated medical universities had a significantly higher value (90 percent), the private universities are at 80 percent.
