Refugees – Asylum numbers continue to rise

This is an increase of 114 percent compared to the same month of 2021, when 1,567 applications were submitted. Ukrainians weren’t an issue at all. Just 21 citizens of the country, which has meanwhile been hit by Russian aggression, applied for asylum in Austria in January. This was roughly in the range of the Georgians with 20 applications. More than twice as many citizens of the Russian Federation – namely 46 – applied for asylum. Only one person from Ukraine was legally granted asylum, plus two who received subsidiary protection.

Syrians and Afghans between 18 and 35 leading

As has been the case for many years, asylum seekers from Syria and Afghanistan are dominant. 34 percent of the applications came from Syrians, 29 percent from Afghans. The newly designed asylum statistics also provide a better overview of how old the refugees are. The largest part is in the age group 18 to 35, which accounts for 55 percent of the applicants. In the case of the over-65s, on the other hand, just seven applications were made. After all, 1,070 applications came from minors, of which 505 were unaccompanied. The majority of men is clear in the statistics. Only 15 percent of the applications came from women.

In the near future, there will be a great deal of demand for basic services, which are also available to those people from Ukraine who do not want to apply for asylum. As of the beginning of February, a good 30,200 people were in basic care, with the federal states being responsible for more than 26,000.
