The US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinkenconfirmed that Gustavo Cardenas and Jorge Alberto Fernandez they had returned to the country in a statement issued Wednesday morning.
“We express our deepest gratitude to our many partners around the world who joined us in calling for his release,” he said.
“While we welcome this important positive step, we continue to press for the release of all unjustly detained US citizens in Venezuela and around the worldBlinken stressed.
Gustavo Cárdenas was Vice President of Strategic Relations of the subsidiary of the state-owned PDVSA in the United States. The other released is the Cuban-American Jorge Alberto Fernández, arrested in early 2021 in the state of Táchira (border with Colombia) and accused of “terrorism”.
The ‘Citgo 6’ -five US nationals and one permanent resident- were arrested in Venezuela in 2017. Washington has called for their release on numerous occasions.
The NGO Coalition for Human Rights and Democracy referred to Fernández’s release on Twitter: “He was unjustly detained and accused of being a terrorist, simply for carrying a drone,” according to that group.
Fernández alleged that he was doing tourism in Venezuela and that he was intercepted by the military at a checkpoint.
The president of United States, Joe BidenHe assured on Tuesday that both men had been “unfairly detained in Venezuela.”
The meeting between a high-level US delegation and Maduro over the weekend was seen as a potential turning point in relations, after the US ended operations of its Venezuelan embassy in 2019. Washington is unaware of Maduro’s re-election. Maduro in 2018 and recognizes the opposition leader as interim president Juan Guaido.
