Crowded and without masks, people danced in Upper Austria’s discos last weekend after most of the Corona measures were lifted. The result of this party weekend should now be apparent: 8712 new infections were reported yesterday, 3500 more than on Tuesday.
It is the highest number of new infections recorded in Upper Austria since the beginning of the pandemic. The last “record” of 8,553 was reached on February 9 this year, also on a Wednesday. The third day of the week is traditionally when most infections are reported. Then the effects of parties at the weekend are shown, and the results of the school tests are also entered.
These were also particularly drastic yesterday: on a single day there were 1790 positive tests among the students, which corresponds to 1.7 percent of the Upper Austrian school population. The teachers were even more affected, of whom almost two percent were absent from the virus yesterday alone, as the education department announced.
30 fewer people than the day before were treated yesterday in Upper Austria’s normal wards for Covid-19. The slight downward trend also continued in the intensive care units, with the number of Covid patients falling from 24 to 23.
56.5 percent of Covid intensive care patients are not vaccinated, for those in normal care the proportion is 45.8 percent.
