This is shown by a representative online survey of 400 teenagers (11 to 17 years) published on Thursday on behalf of the EU initiative Saferinternet.at. Hold their ground at the top Whatsapp (96 percent), YouTube (95 percent) and Instagram (81 percent). The video app has increased in popularity tik tokwith an increase of 13 percentage points Snapchat was able to catch up and now occupies fourth place together with the photo-sharing app (both 70 percent). When it comes to regular use, it even has the edge among the video portals: 77 percent of young people who use TikTok say they do it every day – that’s more than YouTube (64 percent daily use).
Discord and Roblox are popular
The chat platform was also able to advance further in the overall ranking discord (plus 13 percentage points), which is particularly popular with younger people. 53 percent of eleven to fourteen year olds state that they use the application. The online gaming platform was also surveyed for the first time Roblox (21 percent), which is increasingly being used as a social network and is also particularly popular with younger people.
TikTok and Pinterest more popular with girls
The Youth Internet Monitor 2022 shows that there are still large differences between the sexes. TikTok (used by 78 percent of all girls surveyed and 62 percent of all boys) and Pinterest (Girls 66 percent and boys 19 percent) are currently much more popular with the female target group than with young men. In contrast, the platforms originating from the gaming sector Twitter (Girls eleven percent and boys 49 percent) and Discord (girls 30 percent and boys 61 percent) used by significantly more male adolescents. The exception is Roblox, which is used slightly more often by girls (24 to 17 percent).
signal increased
Almost all of the young people surveyed use WhatsApp, but other messenger services are also being used increasingly. So could signal by 13 percentage points and is now level with Telegram at 25 percent. The others are Snapchat (70 percent), Facebook Messenger (27 percent), iMessage (18 percent), Viber (14 percent) and Kik Messenger (6 percent).
Social media is a completely natural part of life for young people – the constant change of platforms is also part of it. “The task of adults is to create a safety net and those responsible can only do that if there is also an overview of the apps and channels currently in use. The Youth Internet Monitor is the map, so to speak,” said Secretary of State for Youth Claudia Plakolm (ÖVP).
