LASK will face Slavia Prague in the first leg of the top 16 in the UEFA Europe Conference League tonight from 18:45 CET. The club from the Czech capital has been Czech champions four times in the past five years. In the previous season, the double of championship and cup victory was achieved. The club has been 99 percent owned by Chinese business conglomerate CEFC China Energy since 2016. Since 2018, it has been jointly controlled by Citic Group and Sinobo Group. Slavia Prague advanced to the last 16 of the Conference League with an aggregate score of 6:4 against Fenerbahce Istanbul. However, the Czechs are missing some injured or suspended players.
LASK sees itself as an outsider in this game. “In the past, LASK was often confronted with the fact that it had been made smaller,” says coach Andreas Wieland. Postscript: “We have the potential to annoy Slavia. There are always possibilities.” The offensive players Sascha Horvath, Andreas Gruber (both ill) and Marko Raguz (sick) are not available to the coach today. The question arises as to who should score the goals. Of the six Linz goalscorers in 2022, only one player remains in the squad, Thomas Goiginger.
The two duels with Slavia Prague offer the athletes the opportunity to reach the quarter-finals of a major European club competition for the first time in the club’s history. The second leg will take place next Thursday (March 17) from 9 p.m. in the NV Arena in Sankt Pölten.
