Camp beds have been set up in the town hall, where the refugees are to be temporarily accommodated until they are allocated to other quarters in the communities. The city itself will initially set up the youth hostel on the Ennsleite for around 50 refugees from the Ukraine. “We are currently examining other accommodation options, and there is also a great willingness to help from private individuals who want to accommodate refugees in apartments and private houses,” says the President of Volkshilfe Oberösterreich Michael Schodermayr (SP), who is also a doctor and social councilor in Steyr.
Schodermayr asks for donations in kind (blankets, tinned food, baby food and diapers preferred) on behalf of the People’s Aid for the people who have to endure the war in Ukraine. The refugees in the town hall are fed by the Red Cross and cooked with a warm lunch from the old people’s and nursing home on the Tabor. Mayor Markus Vogl (SP) announced that the city would take in so many refugees that the war victims could be cared for properly: “It can’t be pinned down to a number,” he said, speaking of a “great wave of willingness to help in our city “.
