The US denied that the sanctions on Venezuela will be relaxed in the short term

“We held a meeting with our good friend (Russian Foreign Minister) Sergey Lavrov. We reviewed our bilateral strategic relations and the complex international scenario,” Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, at the head of the Venezuelan delegation, wrote on Twitter, the AFP agency reported.

This ratification of the strategic alliance that Venezuela has with Russia comes a few days after the visit made by US officials to Caracas last Saturday, ending a long period without bilateral relations.

The Bloomberg agency, however, assured today, citing a report from an official from the Joe Biden government, that “talks on oil trade are ongoing at a general level and US officials, who visited Venezuela last Saturday, (but) did not commit to a relaxation of sanctions.”

The US agency adds that the decision to reduce economic restrictions on Venezuela, after the ban on imports of oil and other energy products from Russia, will depend on the outcome of the talks in Caracas.

Over the weekend, a US delegation paid a visit to Venezuela to discuss a range of issues, including energy security and the health of Americans detained in the Latin American country, the White House said.

On tuesday night, President Joe Biden announced the release by Venezuela of US citizens Jorge Fernández and Gustavo Cárdenasone of six Citgo executives arrested in the country in 2017.

A senior White House official said that Venezuela did not offer Washington oil in exchange for Americans detained in the country.

Asked if his government is evaluating reviewing the economic sanctions on Venezuela, Jen Psaki, minimized that possibility in the short term.

“Since you are evaluating how to spend your energies at this time of a lot of news in the world, I would not focus many of them on conversations about the future of the United States importing oil, at this time, from Venezuela,” Psaki said during a press conference. .
