Borrell: Pause in Iran nuclear talks in Vienna necessary

Although the final text is “essentially” on the table, Borrell said on Twitter on Friday. But because of “external factors” a break is now “necessary,” he said, alluding to Russia’s latest demands. Moscow had demanded guarantees from western states that the sanctions imposed because of the Ukraine war would not affect trade relations with Iran. In addition to the European states, Iran also reacted with irritation to the Russian demands, which were made for the first time last weekend. Borrell said he would now stay in touch with the parties to the Iran nuclear deal and the US “to overcome the current situation.”

In the past few months, negotiators for the five remaining parties to the Iran nuclear deal had been negotiating how the agreement could be reactivated with US involvement. This provides for strict controls on Iran’s nuclear program in return for an easing of international sanctions against Iran. This model collapsed after the United States, under then-President Donald Trump, left the agreement in 2018. Because the US torpedoed trade with Iran with threats of sanctions, Iran withdrew from its obligations under the deal.
