Upper Austria helps Ukraine

War has been raging in Ukraine for more than two weeks. And with every additional day, with every additional hour that the war lasts, the humanitarian suffering of the population increases. Ukraine is heading towards one of the biggest humanitarian crises in Europe. More than two million people are already on the run.

The Red Cross is on a large scale and is helping in Ukraine, in neighboring countries and in Austria. The Oberösterreichische Nachrichten therefore launched the “Upper Austria Helps Ukraine” campaign together with the Red Cross of Upper Austria. The aim of the cooperation is to be able to help precisely.

Where and how to help

The Ukrainian Red Cross (URK) has 550 employees and 4,000 volunteers throughout the country. The International Committee of the Red Cross is on site with 600 helpers.

The URK helps, among other things, with first aid training courses, which are held either online or in air raid shelters and subway stations, but also with the provision of first aid and psychological care, the supply of food and hygiene items, support in the evacuation of affected persons, especially children and people with disabilities. But the support of people in need with vouchers and cash benefits is already being prepared, it said.

The Austrian Red Cross supports refugees in Austria in this emergency situation and sends personnel and supplies of relief supplies to the crisis region and neighboring countries. The Austrian Red Cross also supports the Ukrainian Red Cross and the International Red Cross Movement financially. In order to provide people who have fled the Ukraine with refuge, the Red Cross of Upper Austria continuously builds and operates temporary emergency quarters throughout the state. There, people fleeing can stay overnight, receive simple food and basic sanitary care.
