Pope Francis asks to stop the massacre in Ukraine or cities will be reduced to cemeteries

The Pope indicated that the port Mariupolin southern Ukraine, besieged and severely hit by Russian attacks, “has become a martyr city in the heartbreaking war that is devastating Ukraine,” the AFP news agency reported.

“Faced with the barbarism of the killing of children, innocent people and defenseless civilians, there are no strategic reasons, only the unacceptable armed attack must be stopped before it reduces cities to cemeteries,” he asserted.

Francis also asked “that the cries of those who suffer be heard and that the bombings and attacks cease. That there is a real and decisive approach in the negotiation, and that the humanitarian corridors are effective and safe”, reported the information portal of the Holy See, Vatican News.

From the beginning of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Francis was very committed to the issue, condemning the war several times, although without mentioning Russia.

Last week, Polish Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, Vatican beggar, arrived in Ukraine on behalf of the pontiff, who asked him to stay there as long as necessary to provide support to the Ukrainian people “in these dramatic moments in their history.”

On February 25, one day after the start of Russian military operations in Ukraine, the Pope visited the Russian embassy to the Vatican, where he met with the ambassador to try to mediate the conflict.

In the days that followed, Francis called for stopping armed attacks, opening humanitarian corridors for civilians who want to flee combat zones and the country, and finding a diplomatic way out of the crisis.

The pontiff has prayed several times for the Ukrainian refugees, to whom he donated medical supplies. He also thanked Poland for hosting more than 1 million of them.
