Iran claims attack near US embassy in Iraq

“Last night, the ‘Strategic Center of Conspiracy and Evil of the Zionists’ was targeted by the powerful missiles of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps,” the organization said in a statement collected by the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

Iran “warns the Zionist regime in Israel that any aggression will receive a harsh, decisive and destructive response”according to the note.

The missile attack comes as talks to revive the 2015 Iran nuclear deal face the prospect of collapse, after a last-minute Russian demand forced world powers to pause negotiations for an indefinite period despite have largely completed a text.

The missiles, which targeted the new US consulate building, caused only material damage and one civilian was injured.the Kurdish Interior Ministry said. An Iraqi security official told Reuters the missiles were made in Iran.

A US official blamed Iran for the attack earlier on Sunday, but gave no further details.

A Kurdish spokesman for the regional authorities said Sunday’s attack targeted civilian residential areas, not a foreign base, and called on the international community to carry out an investigation.

Separately, the State Department spokesman called it an “outrageous attack” but said no Americans were injured and no damage was done to his government’s facilities in Erbil.

US forces stationed at the Erbil international airport complex have been subjected to rocket and drone attacks in the past, which Washington blames on Iranian-aligned militia groups, but such attacks have not occurred for several months.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday that it had summoned the ambassador of Iran, an ally and neighbor, to protest the missile launch.

The ministry denounced in a statement “the flagrant violation of the sovereignty” of Iraq and said that it had “summoned the ambassador to Iraq of the Islamic Republic of Iran” to “communicate the government’s protests over the missile attacks” that have provoked ” material losses” and “damage to civil installations and citizens’ homes”.

Asked about Sunday’s attack, Israel’s military said it did not comment on foreign media reports and the prime minister’s office declined to comment.

In another sign of rising regional tensions, Iran also called off a fifth round of talks with its regional rival on Sunday. Saudi Arabiawhich was to take place in Baghdad on Wednesday.
