The note, signed by the executive director of UNICEF, Catherine Russell; the head of UNFPA, Dr. Natalia Kanem, and the director general of the WHO, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, denounces that “the attacks against the most vulnerable population, including babies, pregnant women and the sick” are “an act of unconscious cruelty”.
According to the WHO health surveillance system, there have been at least 31 incidents of this nature since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, of which 24 have resulted in the damage or destruction of these centers. A total of 12 people have died and 34 have been injured, according to these estimates.
The UN agencies recall that since the beginning of the invasion, on February 24, 4,300 babies have been born throughout the country, and that 80,000 Ukrainian women are expected to give birth in the next three months even though right now “medical oxygen and medical supplies are at dangerously low levels.”
“The healthcare system in Ukraine is clearly under significant pressure, and its collapse would be a catastrophe. Everything possible must be done to prevent this from happening”, declare those responsible for the agencies.
For all these reasons, the agencies make “a call for an immediate ceasefire, which includes unhindered access so that people in need can access humanitarian assistance”, they add before ensuring “a peaceful resolution to end the war in Ukraine is possible.”
