According to Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer, it is “one of the greatest humanitarian challenges since the end of the Second World War”.
The “Ukraine Unit – Refugee Coordination” was set up in the Federal Chancellery, headed by Michael Takacs. He was already responsible for this during the refugee crisis of 2015/2016, at that time under the refugee coordinator Christian Konrad.
Meanwhile, the Federal Agency for Care and Support Services (BBU), which is responsible for looking after refugees, has taken stock of the situation. So far, more than 6,600 people, companies, communities and social organizations have reported more than 29,500 free quarters and overnight accommodations. In addition, four federal care facilities for displaced persons from Ukraine have now been set up. Every day, around 400 to 500 refugees from Ukraine are accommodated in these quarters and then, in cooperation with the federal states, placed in state quarters and in longer-term accommodation.
More than 600 accommodations
In Upper Austria, 1,060 Ukrainians are currently being accommodated in the 13 emergency shelters of the Red Cross, and there are a total of 1,550 emergency shelters, informed Social Provincial Councilor Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (VP) yesterday. So far, more than 600 long-term housing options have been reported by private individuals and organizations. In this way, 300 displaced persons were given a roof over their heads with the help of Volkshilfe, Caritas and the Red Cross.
The additional train provided by ÖBB for the Budapest-Munich route was already being used on Saturday. The wagons were already overcrowded when they arrived at Vienna Central Station. Almost 5,000 people were counted in a total of 50 trains on Saturday. It was 4,000 on Friday, after 4,500 on Thursday and 3,600 last Wednesday. The number of people who stayed in the main station overnight fell slightly to 90 people. The ÖBB currently has no supply problems, it said. ÖBB boss Andreas Matthä and Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) were in Poland on Saturday to agree on additional support.
