The seven-day average of daily new infections has already risen to 42,033, the seven-day incidence to 3,276.6. 14 other fatalities were reported. The number of patients in hospitals is also increasing, and the number of vaccinations is continuing to decline.
Number of hospital patients increases
It’s been nine days since almost all corona protection measures fell in Austria. Since then, the number of cases has increased rapidly. On Monday there were already 387,930 laboratory-confirmed active cases across Austria. In the past week alone, 294,234 new SARS-CoV-2 infections were registered.
There are currently 2,856 people in the hospital, 59 more than on Sunday. Within the past week, 264 new patients had to be admitted. The situation in intensive care units is stable. 192 seriously ill people were cared for there on Monday, five more than the day before. That is almost as many Covid 19 patients as a week ago with 189 infected people.
14 deaths since Sunday
14 deaths have been reported since Sunday alone, and 195 deaths last week. Almost exactly two years ago – on March 12, 2020 – there was the first Covid 19 death in Austria. Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have already been 15,221 fatalities. 169.5 people per 100,000 inhabitants died from or with Covid-19.
Since the beginning of the pandemic there have already been 3,188,147 confirmed cases in Austria. 2,784,996 people are currently considered to have recovered. The federal state with the highest seven-day incidence is currently Styria with 3,806.8, followed by Lower Austria, Vorarlberg and Upper Austria (3,720.8, 3,694.2 and 3,465.4 respectively). It is followed by Salzburg (3,292.5), Burgenland (2,928.9), Tyrol (2,832), Carinthia (2,721.3) and Vienna (2,695.2).
As usual, there was significantly less testing at the weekend. A total of only 353,345 rapid PCR and antigen tests have been reported in the past 24 hours. Of these, 316,759 were meaningful PCR tests, the positive rate was 10.8 percent. In the past week, an average of more than 528,000 PCR analyzes were carried out every day, eight percent delivered positive results.
The number of vaccinations is falling
While the number of new infections continues to rise, the number of vaccinations continues to decline. Only 911 vaccinations were carried out across Austria on Sunday – fewer than ever since the start of the Austria-wide vaccination campaign at the beginning of January 2021. Only 62 people had a corona vaccination administered for the first time on Sunday.
According to the data from the e-vaccination card, a total of 6,808,478 people have already received at least one vaccination. Exactly 6,233,411 people and thus 69.4 percent of Austrians have a valid vaccination. The protection rate (valid vaccination certificate) is highest in Burgenland at 75.5 percent. In Lower Austria 71.5 percent of the population have a valid vaccination protection, in Styria 70.2 percent. After Vienna (68.5), Tyrol (67.5), Carinthia (66.4), Salzburg (65.7) and Vorarlberg (65.4), Upper Austria brings up the rear, as usual, with 65 percent.
