Lamprecht: “After the wave is before the wave”

The current wave can no longer be stopped, but “after the wave is before the wave,” says the newly appointed professor of internal medicine with a focus on pneumology at the Johannes Kepler University.

“We will not defeat the pandemic with tests alone,” Lamprecht pointed out in a press conference on Monday when he was appointed. Rather, it needs a high level of immunity in the population. He only answered indirectly whether compulsory vaccination would be justified: For him as a doctor, it is not about the duty, but about the goal that as many people as possible be vaccinated. He understands that compulsory vaccination “would now interfere too much with personal freedoms”, but the burden in the hospitals will probably increase again in the fall. In principle, it makes sense to evaluate the situation in the next two to three months, as planned, but he is skeptical “whether people can get up to get a booster vaccination in the summer, even if it makes sense”.

Rector Meinhard Lukas emphasized that compulsory vaccination was not introduced to break the omicron wave, but because of the threat of subsequent waves. The suspension of the obligation to vaccinate is “not plausible compared to the goals formulated by the National Council, but a reaction to social acceptance,” stated the lawyer. Because for the group of those who have not yet been vaccinated or recovered, according to the evaluation announced by the federal government, there will be little time to build up full vaccination protection by autumn, he pointed out.
