Abolishing the electricity tax would hardly reduce electricity costs

In the discussion about cushioning the sharp rise in energy prices, Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) spoke out in favor of reducing energy taxes – this also includes electricity taxes. A cancellation of this levy would save an average household only a little money, said the head of the economics department at E-Control, Johannes Mayer, in the Ö1 “Mittagsjournal”.

With an average electricity consumption of 3,500 kilowatt hours per year, a household including sales tax would save around 60 euros, explained Mayer. A suspension of the natural gas tax would bring about 105 euros for an average household with an annual consumption of 15,000 kWh.

A reduction in mineral oil tax (MÖSt) is also being discussed in order to dampen the rise in fuel prices. According to ecoAustria economist Monika Köppl-Turyna, this would be possible temporarily, “on the other hand, we have to make sure that other climate-friendly energy sources become cheaper in the medium term and I would think it would be good if electricity sales were reduced at the same time,” said them in the Ö1 “Mittagsjournal”.
