The European Union wants to impose sanctions on Roman Abramovich and other Russian oligarchs. As the AFP news agency learned from diplomatic circles on Monday, the assets of the owner of the British football club Chelsea FC are to be frozen in the EU with the next round of sanctions. In addition, Abramovich and the other people affected are to be refused entry into the EU.
Britain had previously imposed punitive measures against Abramovich and other oligarchs who, according to London sources, belong to the “inner circle” around Russian President Vladimir Putin. Among other things, Abramovich owns a villa in the London district of Kensington and the luxury yacht “Eclipse”, which was the largest yacht in the world until 2013.
Abramovich has had an EU passport with Portuguese citizenship since 2021. The circumstances of his naturalization are currently being investigated.
