They come from an orphanage in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk and, thanks to Michael Kiener’s private initiative, can live in safety in the former “Am Kogl” sanatorium for the time being. They should stay there until they can return home, said Mayor Ferdinand Aigner (ÖVP) on Monday.
The children and young people between the ages of seven and 17 are part of the “Chernobyl Children” project run by the environmental organization Global 2000. After the outbreak of the war, they fled to Lviv with four companions, and when there were Russian attacks there, they were taken to Upper Austria in two buses, Aigner reported .
A school backpack for every child
According to the mayor, the Hochreiter group of companies, which repaired the former sanatorium and made it available, as well as numerous volunteers from the community and parish, who cleaned the premises and are now taking care of the care, are also involved in the joint effort. “The willingness to help in town is enormous,” reports Deputy Mayor Caroline Seber. As a welcome, each child received a backpack with school items.
The transport was organized by Global 2000. How things will continue is still open – for example, where the children will go to school. However, given the spatial conditions, it would probably be possible to teach them in the former sanatorium, says Aigner. Here one is still in coordination with the country.
The market community has set up a donation account (“Orphans Ukraine”): IBAN AT02 3452 3000 0003 1567. The money will be used for the orphans and those in need in Ukraine.
Video: More and more refugees from Ukraine arrive in Austria every day. In the federal state of Upper Austria, too, the search for refugee quarters is becoming increasingly urgent. 600 private housing options for refugees have already been reported.
