SP request shows building land reserves

Upper Austria has huge reserves of building land that has already been dedicated but not yet used (the OÖN reported). Although 11,488 hectares have already been designated as building land, they are still empty. This corresponds to around 19 percent of all building land in Upper Austria.

The data on which this information is based was collected by the state’s economic department on the basis of a written request by the SPÖ in the state parliament. MP Heidi Strauss (SP) had the building land reserves determined for all Upper Austrian municipalities. The result: In almost all municipalities, the building land reserves have decreased at least slightly over the past three years. “The central question is whether young families can afford this building land,” says Strauss. She suspects that most of the unused building plots “serve as speculative objects” and are therefore “unaffordable anyway” for the vast majority of house builders.

She sees the state’s economic department as having a duty to ensure that there will still be enough affordable building land in Upper Austria for young families in the future.
