The images of the war in Ukraine and above all of the effects on the civilian population have been dominating world events and media reports for weeks. As great as the distress of those affected is, the wave of willingness to help is also great in Upper Austria.
This is reflected in the many private initiatives that have emerged to provide, in one way or another, financial or material assistance to those most affected by the war. The palette is large. Cakes are baked and sold to raise money, or people make parts of their apartments or houses available to refugees from Ukraine.
At the weekend, OÖ Nachrichten and the Red Cross launched the fundraising campaign “Upper Austria helps Ukraine”. The donations ensure that every cent goes to the needy people in the war zone as well as in the neighboring countries, who have to look after, house and care for the many refugees from Ukraine.

Help for people and animals
Parish Linz – St. Peter, Wallenbergstrasse 20, Linz
There is also diligent collection in the parish of Linz – St. Peter, which has already made a name for itself through its many social activities and the blessing of animals, which is known far beyond Linz. “We are there for people and animals and want to support them,” says Pastor Franz indicator.
On the one hand, non-prescription medicines, bandages and disinfectants are needed, on the other hand animal feed and animal accessories (transport boxes, blankets, etc.). Monetary donations are also welcome, with these, in turn, are intended to be used to buy relief supplies.
Donations in kind can be handed in at any time in the boxes set up in front of the parish office of St. Peter – Linz. In the meantime, four vans full of relief supplies have already been sent to Ukraine, reported the indicator. The willingness to help is great, especially with the animals: “Human suffering is close to us, the animals are often forgotten.” Many refugees do not want to leave their pets behind: “They see them as part of their family, and we want to help there too .”
Pastor indicator also wants to help those people who fled their homeland before the war and need accommodation. As in 2015 with the refugee crisis, the parish hall is again available as accommodation for refugees from the Ukraine. There have already been initial inquiries, pets are of course allowed to be brought along. “Every free square meter brings something,” is a convinced indicator.

Running for Ukraine
Wolfgang Pfeiffer, Managing Director Kultur Hof Linz
Since last year, the traditional Linz 3 Bridge Run has been linked to a good cause. At the 33rd edition of the sports festival for the whole family on April 30 from 3 p.m., each participant supports the B7 association in the Linzer Tabakfabrik with a premium package. However, the current situation in the Ukraine has not left its mark on the Kultur Hof as the organizer of the 3-bridge run and on the B7. And so this year is run for refugees from the Ukraine.
Every single donation from the purchase of a premium package goes directly to the women’s vocational center in Grieskirchen, according to Kultur Hof boss Wolfgang Pfeiffer. “We support the Ukrainian women in an advisory capacity, to give them space to meet each other and to learn German as a foreign language,” say the B7 managing directors Ulrike Würzburger and Helmut Bayer.
