Polcanova in Singapore doubles with Szocs in semifinals

With the Romanian Bernadette Szocs, the 27-year-old defeated the South Koreans Lee Zion/Choi Hyo-joo 3-0 (3.10.9) on Tuesday. In the semifinals on Wednesday, the number two seeded Japanese Hina Hayata/Mima Ito will play. Later on Wednesday, Polcanova will play her singles round of 16 match against Thailand’s Suthasini Sawettabut.

“We are very happy to be in the semi-finals of the biggest tournament on the World Tour. We played extremely well, our tactics were perfect,” said Polcanova, beaming after the third win without losing a set. With Hayata/Ito, however, a more difficult task awaits.

In men’s doubles, Robert Gardos/Daniel Habesohn beat Germany’s Benedikt Duda/Dang Qiu 2:3 (-10,11,-7,6,-2) in the quarter-finals. In the round of 16, the two had defeated the Swedish world champions Kristian Karlsson/Mattias Falck 3:2. A Grand Smash lasts two weeks, the winners receive 2,000 world ranking points and the record prize money is 2 million dollars (1.84 million euros).
