According to Unicef, almost every second a child in Ukraine becomes a refugee.
In the last 20 days after the Russian offensive, about 1.4 million children have been forced to flee of the country, about 55 per minute or “practically one child per second”, said James Elder, spokesman for Unicef, at a press conference in Geneva.
Total, more than 2.95 million people have fled Ukraineaccording to the latest balance of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
“This refugee crisis, because of its speed and magnitude, unprecedented since World War IIElder said.
The spokesman stressed that children run “the risk of being separated from their parents, suffering violence, being sexually exploited or serving the traffic” of people.
More than three million people have fled Ukraine since Russia began its invasion of the country on February 24, a UN body said on Tuesday.
“We have reached the figure of three million people in terms of population movement out of Ukraine,” Paul Dillon, spokesman for the International Organization for Migration (IOM), told reporters in Geneva.
As of Monday, seven of the ten active humanitarian corridors in Ukraine have managed to remove some 4,000 people from hotspots of conflict, kyiv reported.
