“There are 70,000 cases worldwide in which women die,” said gynecologist Sabine Enengl, senior physician at the Kepler University Hospital in Linz at the Pharmacy Congress in Schladming. In pregnant women suffering from Covid-19, even seven to ten percent are affected by preeclampsia. Specialists therefore recommend corona vaccination.
Preeclampsia can trigger seizures (eclampsia) and kidney failure in expectant mothers, Enengl emphasized. In addition to high blood pressure, symptoms may include upper abdominal pain or headaches, nausea, flickering eyes, malaise, chest pain, shortness of breath or edema. Miscarriage may occur or necessitate the induction of a premature birth.
According to the doctor, risk factors in addition to a SARS-CoV-2 infection are primarily lifestyle factors, such as pregnancy in older women and diseases such as obesity, diabetes or chronic high blood pressure. The reason why one pregnant woman develops preeclampsia and the other does not is not fully understood. “Birth is the only causal therapy,” says Enengl. But it is not that easy to “get the child”, depending on the urgency by induction of labor or caesarean section.
