Within 24 hours there were 52,045 laboratory-confirmed new infections. The number of hospital patients – especially on normal wards – continues to rise. Since Wednesday, 31 other fatalities have also been reported. As of Thursday, there were already 433,407 laboratory-confirmed active cases – that’s 4.8 percent of the total population.
This means that every 20th Austrian is now actively infected with SARS-CoV-2. In the past week alone, 313,821 people contracted the virus. The 52,045 new cases are the second highest daily figure after 58,583 yesterday Wednesday. The average of the past seven days has risen to 44,832. The seven-day incidence was already 3,494.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Thursday.
More than 3000 Covid patients in hospitals
Omicron is having an increasing impact on hospitals. The number of patients continues to rise. There are now 3,086 people in the hospital, 53 more than on Thursday. Most of the 2,875 infected people have to be cared for in normal wards. Since last Thursday, 418 Covid 19 patients have been added to the hospitals. 211 people are currently being cared for in intensive care units, ten fewer than the day before. Within the past week, however, 32 seriously ill people had to be admitted to ICUs.
There have been 31 deaths since yesterday, the seven-day average was 26.3 per day. 184 deaths were registered in the past week. Overall, the Covid 19 pandemic has claimed 15,320 lives in Austria since it broke out. 170.6 people per 100,000 inhabitants have already died from or with Covid-19.
