when the peace agreement could be signed, according to the chief negotiator in kyiv

Podolyak gave an interview to a Polish media in which he gave details of the multiple meetings that he has been holding with his colleagues with his Russian peers, in order to stop the invasion, achieve the withdrawal of foreign troops and achieve peace.

The President’s Advisor Volodomyr Zelensky stated that “The immediate withdrawal of Russian troops is one of the key aspects of the peace agreement” and made it clear that “the Russian and Ukrainian delegations maintain their positions” so reaching an agreement on the points in question “can take from a few days to a week and a half. During this time, we should move closer to crafting a peace agreement.”

At the same time, he pointed out that once peace is signed, the Vienna Convention will enter into force. “She clearly says that the peace treaty can be annulled if the warring states do not withdraw their troops from enemy territory. Therefore, any attempt to keep Russian soldiers on Ukrainian lands will have no legal basis, ”she explained, referring to the obligation that Russia will have to withdraw its army to its own territory.

Asked about the mechanisms that Ukraine will use to enforce the peace agreement, the Ukrainian chief negotiator said that they will seek to create an alliance with other countries, including Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovenia, whose prime ministers were in kyiv in recent years. days.

“Other countries will ensure the fulfillment of the agreement and the security of Ukraine in the future. It will be a document detailing the procedure to be followed in case of aggression by Russia,” he said. and added that this option was put on the table by President Zelensky, which, in his opinion, “can become a proposal to create a completely new balance of power in Europe.”

In this way, Podolyak reaffirmed both the criticisms towards the NATO such as Ukraine’s renunciation of its bid to join the alliance. “The invasion of Ukraine has shown that the entire European security architecture must be checked,” he said, continuing: “We know that Putin can only be stopped by force. NATO today does not have this strength. In our opinion, it is currently an organization whose operation was mainly limited to holding summits in which the generals put on dangerous faces.”

Regarding how this new alliance will be laid out, he said that “it will not be a document like the Budapest Memorandum”, but rather a specific agreement that complies with all the norms of international law. It will describe, step by step, the mechanisms that will be put in place in the event of another attack on Ukraine.

“We want to make sure we are never left alone on the battlefield again. The states that will act as guarantors, including Russia itself, will assume specific obligations. In the future, this document can be expanded and, based on it, a completely new alliance will be created that will guarantee security throughout Europe”, he expressed about what could be a resounding blow to NATO in case Europe chooses to build your own security organization.

About a possible meeting between Zelensky and Putin to sign the signing of a peace agreementPodolyak noted that “as soon as the work on the contract is completed, we will begin to organize the meeting.” The meeting would take place “in the coming weeks” and although he did not specify the location, he logically ruled out that it is in Moscow: “It could be anywhere, except Russia.”
