The ÖAMTC registered 1.807 euros for premium petrol today, yesterday it was 1.889 euros per liter. Oil prices, on the other hand, have risen again, albeit less strongly than the day before. A barrel (159 liters) of North Sea Brent cost around 10:50 a.m. 107.54 US dollars, an increase of 0.84 percent.
The SPÖ sees its demand confirmed today that Economics Minister Margarete Schramböck (ÖVP) must take action against the high fuel prices and refers to the price law. “A current VCÖ analysis proves that in no other EU country have the prices for filling up as much as in Austria. This is a clear case in which the Austrian price law must be applied,” says SPÖ energy spokesman Alois Schroll . If the minister does not apply the law, she is breaking it.
The day before yesterday, Schramböck had stated in a broadcast on the SPÖ’s demand: “The price law comes into effect when our prices develop noticeably compared to other comparable European countries. The price comparisons that we receive from the Ministry of Energy every Thursday show so far, however, a development in harmony with Europe.”
This morning, in turn, the VCÖ announced, with reference to figures from the EU Commission, that the price in no other EU country has risen as much as in Austria. The price increase was, for example, seven cents higher than in Germany. The difference was smaller for diesel: Austria has the second highest price increase in the EU after Germany (57 cents), with 50 cents, the VCÖ reported.
Today, the ÖAMTC repeated its long-standing demand that there must be more price transparency on the crude oil markets – because the sharp rise in prices over the past few days and now the rapid decline are in need of clarification. Most recently, the voices calling for an examination by the Federal Competition Authority (BWB) had also increased, with Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens) leading the way.
