“The situation in Ukraine once again proves that countries cannot engage in armed clashes that are not in anyone’s interest, and that the international community should embrace peace and security,” Xi told the Chinese daily Global Times.
Likewise, the Chinese president told Biden that both countries, as permanent members of the UN Security Council and the two largest economies in the world “should not only develop their bilateral relations on the right path, but also share international responsibility to time to keep peace in the world”.
The call between the leaders of the two countries comes as Beijing is under significant diplomatic pressure from Washington and its European allies over its refusal to condemn its ally Moscow for invading Ukraine.
After more than three weeks of armed conflict, the Chinese government showed few signs of abandoning the Kremlin, while blaming the escalation of tensions on NATO’s expansion to the east.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry yesterday rejected in strong terms the comments made this week by the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, who criticized Beijing’s position on the war between Russia and Ukraine and said that the Asian giant is “on the wrong side of the history”.
The spokesman for said portfolio, Zhao Lijian, described Blinken as “irresponsible” and added that with that statement “slander and vilify China, revealing a Cold War mentality with its antagonism of blocs”, reported the Russian news agency Sputnik news.
